The White Mountains in New Hampshire offer a wide variety of trails that are suitable for all different levels of hikers. From the summit, this trail offers a breathtaking view of Franconia Notch, Cannon Mountain, and Echo Lake.

Story Time

Artists Bluff is very sentimental for me and will always have a special place in my heart. Several years ago, my boyfriend and I were climbing this trail on a beautiful winter day; I can still feel the excitement of hiking to one of my favorite places. Little did I know, my boyfriend had much more in store for me. Once at the summit, he walked me towards the edge of the bluff so that we could take the scenery in. After a few moments of taking in the view of the mountains, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes! We celebrated with a glass of champagne. Years later, we are happily married and still go on adventures.

About The Trail

Many trail guides rate this trail as an “easy hike”. I would not consider this to be easy because of the moderate to strenuous climb you encounter towards the top. It is not a rock scramble but you do have to be careful on the rocky stairs and exposed roots. You will find these throughout the trail which elevates this hikes’ status to more of an easy to moderate hike, especially when it’s icy.

Parking

We parked at The Echo Lake Beach parking lot. You can choose to do the 1.5 mile loop or 0.5 mile out and back. We opted for the short out and back. From the parking lot, walk back to the road and take a right, heading back towards the interstate. You will see an entry point for this hike, roughly 200 yards down the road on the left.

The Trail

The trail splits off right away, stay right. It quickly turns to steeper rock stairs. Be sure to stop and look out on your way up because there are some pretty views on your ascent through the trees. There will be another point where the trail splits, stay right and it will take you to the breathtaking lookout. Bring some lunch or a snack with you so you can take your time and enjoy the view.

What to bring
